The Traveling Trio made it to the top!!
We got up around 5:30am and met with our guide an hour later. She took us to the bus station and we all went up to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
After taking a guided tour of the citadel – which was already impressive – we quickly exited the park and went right back in to walk up to the gate of the Mountain Machu Picchu. Our tickets allowed us to enter that gate between 9 and 10am. At 10:02, we wrote our name in the registration book and started our hike up to the top.
Almost three hours later and with some resting and snacking, we were 10 minutes away from the top. Unfortunately, the guard had just closed the access to it and told us we were too late and had to go back down. After a couple of questions, he quickly realized we weren’t that slow and because we added some tears of disappointment, he let us go up!
10 Minutes later, we were there. At 3,061 meters high, we enjoyed the spectacular view and felt a great sense of accomplishment. Not bad for a couple of young travelers…
P.S. With the guard following us down, the descent only took us 1 hour and 10 minutes. 😆
