Staring at the ceiling of that San Francisco hotel room … Could we really pull it off? A year of travel? Do we have the resources, the appetite and the nerve to break away from the pack for a while? Step off the proverbial hamster wheel? Create space and time to connect deeply as a family, explore together, discover new places and new faces? Simply Be?
What if? How? Can we? Would we? Would we really?!
Yes.
We would. Live simply and slowly for a while. Breathe life.
A frantic couple of months of planning ensued. The world-wide-web has been a blessing; organizing this type of travel has become so much easier. Anything can be organized and booked from anywhere. Turns out there are quite a few traveling families out there, who share their inspiring stories – the good, the bad and the ugly. Budgets, packing lists, do’s and don’ts, destination ideas a-plenty.
Still, the first question we usually get asked is: what about the kids’ education? Well, that too can be organized from anywhere. We plan to road-school our kids along the way, using online as well as physical resources (yep, we are dragging schoolbooks around!). Dedicated time focused on math, reading and writing; and further learning about what the world has to offer.
We are not hippies. We are not homies. We are quite the average family. With just a tiny hint of rebel.
